Starbucks Rewards UK – Stars & Free Drinks

Starbucks Rewards UK is a free loyalty programme. You earn 10 Stars for every £1 spent using the Starbucks app or card. Redeem 130 Stars for a free filter coffee, 500 Stars for a free handcrafted drink, or save up to 1,000 Stars for merchandise. Gold Level unlocks at 2,500 Stars — giving you free extras like syrups, extra shots, and a birthday drink.

Starbucks Rewards is how regular customers get free drinks, food, and extras at Starbucks UK. But the system is a bit confusing — you have to preload money onto a card, the star levels aren’t obvious, and most people don’t realise what Gold Level actually gives you.

This guide explains exactly how Starbucks Rewards works in the UK, how to sign up, what you can redeem your stars for, and whether it’s actually worth it compared to other coffee loyalty schemes like Costa Club.

How Starbucks Rewards UK Works

Here’s the simple version. Starbucks Rewards is a points-based loyalty programme. You earn points (called “Stars”) every time you buy something. When you collect enough Stars, you can swap them for free drinks, food, or extras.

The catch? You have to pay using the Starbucks app or a registered Starbucks Card. If you pay with cash or a regular debit card, you won’t earn any Stars. You need to load money onto your Starbucks account first — then pay from that balance.

THE BASICS

Cost to join: Free — no membership fee
How you earn: 10 Stars per £1 spent
How you pay: Must use Starbucks app balance or Starbucks Card
First free reward: At 130 Stars (= £13 spend)
Gold Level: At 2,500 Stars (= £250 spend in a year)
Stars expire: Green Level Stars stay as long as you have activity within 2 years. Gold Level Stars don’t expire while you maintain Gold.

How to Sign Up (3 Simple Steps)

1

Download the Starbucks UK app

Get the Starbucks UK app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It’s free. Make sure you download the UK version — the US app won’t work here.

2

Create an account

Sign up with your email address and set a password. Add your birthday — this is important because Gold members get a free birthday drink. You’re automatically enrolled at Green Level as soon as you create your account.

3

Add money to your Starbucks balance

Top up your in-app Starbucks Card with at least £10 using a debit card, credit card, or Apple Pay. You must pay from this balance to earn Stars — paying with a regular card at the till doesn’t count. You can also set up auto top-up so you never run out.

Important:

This is the biggest thing people miss. You only earn Stars when you pay using your Starbucks app or Starbucks Card balance. If you tap your normal debit card or pay cash, you get zero Stars. Always scan the app or use the in-app payment.

How You Earn Stars

The earning rate in the UK is simple:

EARNING RATE

10 Stars for every £1 you spend.

So a £4.20 latte earns you 42 Stars.
A £5.25 breakfast sandwich earns you 52 Stars.
A £2.10 filter coffee earns you 21 Stars.

Pennies count too — a £4.65 Venti Latte earns you 46 Stars (not 40).

You earn Stars on everything: drinks, food, bakery items, merchandise, and even whole bean coffee bags. The only things that don’t earn Stars are gift card purchases and Starbucks Card top-ups (the money earns Stars when you spend it, not when you load it).

What You Can Redeem Stars For

The UK redemption tiers changed in 2025. You now have 4 levels of rewards to choose from — you can redeem early for a small reward, or save up for something bigger.

Stars NeededWhat You GetSpend to EarnExamples
130 StarsFree filter coffee, tea, or Americano£13Filter Coffee, English Breakfast Tea, Caffè Americano
300 StarsFree bakery item£30Croissant, Pain au Chocolat, Banana Loaf
500 StarsFree handcrafted drink£50Latte, Frappuccino, Caramel Macchiato — any size
1,000 StarsFree merchandise£100Reusable cups, tumblers, selected merch
Best value redemption:

The 500 Stars for a free handcrafted drink is the best deal. Order the most expensive drink you can — a Venti Caramel Frappuccino with extras (worth ~£6+) — and you’re getting maximum value from your free reward. Don’t waste 500 Stars on a basic filter coffee when 130 Stars would get you that.

Green Level vs Gold Level

Starbucks Rewards UK has two main levels: Green (everyone starts here) and Gold (for regular customers). Here’s what each one gives you.

FeatureGreen LevelGold Level
How to get itSign up (automatic)Earn 2,500 Stars in 12 months (= £250 spend)
Star earning rate10 Stars per £110 Stars per £1
Free drink rewardsYes — from 130 StarsYes — from 130 Stars

Free extrasNoYes — free extra shots, syrups, whipped cream, dairy alternatives
Stars expiryActive for 2 years with account activityDon’t expire while Gold is maintained
Early accessYes — new drinks before non-membersYes
Mobile order aheadYesYes

Gold Level is worth it if you spend £250+ per year at Starbucks (about £4.80/week). The free extras alone — syrups, extra shots, whipped cream — save you roughly 60p per drink. Over a year, that’s easily £30+ in savings on top of the free drinks you earn from Stars.

Gold Level maths:

If you buy a Grande Latte 5 days a week (£4.20 × 5 = £21/week), you’ll hit Gold Level in about 12 weeks. After that, every drink gets free extras. That’s 40 weeks of free syrups, extra shots, and whipped cream — worth over £50 in savings per year.

Is Starbucks Rewards Worth It? The Maths

Let’s be honest. Starbucks Rewards is not the most generous coffee loyalty scheme in the UK. Here’s the real maths.

How much do you need to spend for a free drink?

THE NUMBERS

Cheapest free reward (filter coffee): 130 Stars = £13 spend
Free handcrafted drink (latte, frap etc): 500 Stars = £50 spend

That means for every £50 you spend at Starbucks, you get one free fancy drink worth roughly £4–5. That’s a return of about 8–10% — not bad, but not amazing either.

If you mainly drink filter coffee or Americanos, the 130-Star redemption is much better value — you get a free drink for every £13 spent. That’s a return of about 16%.

The downside:

You must preload money onto your Starbucks account before you can earn Stars. Most other coffee loyalty schemes (Costa Club, Caffè Nero) let you pay with any method and still earn rewards. This is the biggest complaint about Starbucks Rewards — it locks your money into the Starbucks system.

Starbucks Rewards vs Costa Club vs Caffè Nero

How does Starbucks Rewards compare to the other big UK coffee chains? Here’s a side-by-side comparison.

FeatureStarbucks RewardsCosta ClubCaffè Nero
Spend for a free drink£50 (handcrafted) or £13 (filter)~£22 (with reusable cup)~£27 (9 stamps)
How it works10 Stars per £1, redeem at tiers1 bean per drink, 10 beans = free drink1 stamp per drink, 9 stamps = free drink

Overall valueAverage — best at Gold LevelBest mainstream schemeSimple and solid

Verdict: Costa Club is the best value for most UK coffee drinkers — easier to earn, no payment restrictions, and the reusable cup bonus halves the time to a free drink. Starbucks Rewards is best for people who already drink at Starbucks regularly and can reach Gold Level, where the free extras make it worthwhile. 7 Tips to Earn Stars Faster

EARN MORE STARS

1. Always pay with the app. This sounds obvious but many people forget. If you tap your debit card instead of scanning the app, you get zero Stars. Make it a habit.

2. Buy food + drink together. Every pound counts. A £4.20 latte plus a £4.20 bacon roll earns you 84 Stars — nearly two-thirds of the way to a free filter coffee.

3. Watch for Bonus Star promotions. Starbucks regularly runs double-star days and bonus challenges through the app. Check the “Offers” tab every time you open the app.

4. Buy Starbucks whole bean coffee and merch. Stars aren’t just for drinks. Buying a £10 bag of coffee beans earns you 100 Stars.

5. Order for friends and pay through your app. If you’re buying for a group, pay for everything through your app to earn Stars on the full amount.

6. Set up auto top-up. Never miss Stars because your balance ran out. Set the app to auto-reload £20 when your balance drops below £5.

7. Redeem smartly. Don’t waste 500 Stars on a small filter coffee. Use 130 Stars for basic drinks. Save 500 Stars for the most expensive handcrafted drink you can build — Venti Frappuccino with extras. Maximise your free reward’s value.
